DAB Radio>Nomad JB3 questions
« on: April 10, 2004, 05:40:23 AM »
Dunno if you guys have this in the states, but here in the UK DAB radio (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is slowly taking off:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/digitalradio/about/

I'm thinking about buying one of these:

Specs:

http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/classicseries/dab300.html

Its a £120 DAB tuner with optical out.

Now am I right in thinking all I need to record live radio shows on my JB3 is an optical cable, example:

Will this work OK?? My main question is that the digital signal will be too hot, or not loud enough for the Nomad.

The only concern that I would see is that there may be an SMCS setting in the digital output that would dissallow recording through digital means. Or maybe not. It might allow first generation recording only, like digital satellite TV signals, and so, that would not affect you.

Either way, sounds like a cool thing. :) Is this free digital radio, or is it a pay service like the Serius and XM Radio we have in the 'States?

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

The service is free, and I was impressed by the sound from a friends Pure Evoke consumer unit:

But I wanted something with digital out.

Never heard of any SCMS on this..

I guess my best bet is to get hold of it, and try recording - if it doesnt work I'll take it back.

Got hold of the DAB radio the other day:

-Records optically with great sound onto the Nomad @ 48kHz
-Cuts all signals above 14 kHz. Despite this, I think I like it!

I'm not sure how it would compare to a hi-fi separates FM radio but I'm pleased so far.

Is anyone going to be annoyed receiving a show that I record that cuts the higher frequencies?

even if that radio signal had scms on it..would it even matter since he would be doing either a firewire or  usb transfer on the Nomad?  It's not like a DAT or MD where he would be playing it back through cables to record....

OK, here is the setup:

Standalone DAB hi-fi radio>
Optical Cable>
Nomad JB3 HD recorder @ 48kHz>
USB>
Computer Hard Drive>
Cooledit (resample to 44.1kHz)

Pros: great sound
Cons: No frequencies above about 15kHz

Sharingthegroove have banned DAB radio recordings though:

What do you guys think?

^^^ BUMP ^^^

What do you guys think about this? Should I send the DAB radio back and get an FM radio for recording?
