stand concerns....
« on: January 11, 2005, 02:58:25 PM »
I am gonna be buying a new stand this week....and I found a nice 13 footer on ebay cheap....however, it has a really big footprint...considering most of the places that I'll be taping are fairly small, that kind of concerns me....do you know of any low cost, good quality, stands with smaller footprints?

this is the one that I'm looking at right now...

Photographers and Videographers are using the Savage 13 ft tall Professional Extreme Heavy Duty Air Cushioned Light Stand to hold continuous lights, strobes, diffuser panels, reflectors , boom arms and more.  You can extend this Professional Super Heavy Duty Light Stand from 13 ft tall all the way down to a 4 ft tall.   This is a 4 section light stand with a 52" max base diameter.

To give the Savage 13 ft tall Professional Extreme Heavy Duty Air Cushioned Light Stand extra support, we used oversized large diameter tubing to increase the strength of this light stand and the legs.  The double-bar bracing on the legs is design to increased the support of the three legs and stability of the light stand.  Each leg extends up to 26 inches from the the base center of the light stand.

it's only 42 bucks....

but when you're in a place like the downhome in Johnson City,TN it'd be hard to get a stand like that in there....any suggestions???

Since I tape almost exclusively small bar type venues, I rarely have a need (or ability due to low ceilings) to run very high.  Usually around 7 / 7'6" is max for me, with a very small footprint.  I run a Bogen 3373.  I have an 18" gooseneck to get a bit more height, but rarely need it.  Unless you're taping big sheds and arenas, I think 13' is overkill.  Bogen makes a whole range of stands, if you're so inclined to find something betwen 7' and 13'.  YMMV.

I have that same stand, I think... I hate the footprint.  (the one pic'd, not the one Brian is talking about)

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I'll agree with Brian. If you are just doing clubs/bars, no need for the 13 footer. AMOVA (I think) usually has nice air cushioned stands on eBay for about $12 - $15. I think they are about 8' if I am not mistaken. You can always play with the footprint a little too, depending on the weight of what you put on it and how tall you take it.

how about a Bogen 3097?

Minimum Height  26.3 in (66.8 cm)
Maximum Height  7 ft 9 in (2.4 M)
Closed Length  26 in (66 cm)
Footprint Diameter  37 in (94 cm)
Weight  2.4 lbs (1.1 kg)
Maximum Load  5 lbs (2.3 kg)
Attachment Size  5/8 in (1.6 cm) stud
Accepts Wheels  No
Air Cushioned  No

and I can pick up a cheap taller stand for outdoor gigs where footprint really isn't that big of a deal....think that would be better?

You do not need to run the stand with the legs all the way out.

I can set my bogen 13ft to just over 1ft between each leg. It looks like the bottom part of the legs (where it meets the center pole) is adjustable too. If you loosen it and push it up towards the top part of the legs you can set it with the feet even tighter. The center bar just hangs down between the legs.

It will work better than you think in tight spaces, and you won't need to buy another stand.

If you don't get what I mean, I'll set up my stand and take a couple pics for ya.

Thats true about adjusting the legs.  I don something similar with my taller stand.

I taped at a bar last friday.  For first set, I used the little bogen but there was so much crowd noise and chatter I brought in the taller stand and ran just under 9ft for the second set.  Second set sounds cleaner.

You do not need to run the stand with the legs all the way out.

This is true.  But on most of the larger Bogen stands I've seen, the center pole gets in the way of shrinking the footprint to where I'd like it.  But shoot, if you can get yours down to close to a foot that's pretty damn good - better than many I've seen in the field.  Which model #?

Not that it matters, just curious - close to a foot between each leg (i.e. a 12" x 12" x 12" triangle), or from one leg to the bisector of the imaginary line formed by the other two legs?

I use a Bogen 3078 13ft

Here's a few pics because they're worth a thousand words.

first, the legs at minimum spacing so the center does not hit the floor.

second, the legs at minimum spacing with the bottom cuff up.

third, how the cuffs look together in the middle of the stand so you can set the legs close.

EDIT: of course this will only work with a stand where the bottom is not fixed in place. The one in the original post looks to be built the same as mine.

It works out to be a 10x10x10 triangle the small way, almost 2ft each side the wide way.

Ahhhhh...I suspect the folks I saw didn't know about sliding the cuff up.  Thanks for the pics!
