Run your own FTP Server!

Do you have broadband internet access?

Have a couple or more gigs of free hard drive space?

Want to distribute the music we  all love to our fellow fans (and receive music in return)?

Run your own FTP server!  It's easy and free!!

Even though cable/DSL upload bandwidth isn't stellar, it's enough to host a small FTP server.  Every day, fans pull 2.5 GB  of SHN'd music from the two logins on my FTP server – the equivalent of about 6 audio CDs.  The server runs mostly 24/7, so in a single week fans  download roughly 40 audio CDs!!  (Can you say perpetual-B+P?)

Once you learn about SHN at ETree, here’s how simple it is to run your own FTP server…

Router Note: these instructions assume you have your PC hooked up directly to your broadband connection. If you have a router between your PC and broadband connection, you must use static (not DHCP) LAN IP addresses and you must forward port 21. Contact me if you need assistance.

Windows XP Note: if you're running Windows XP, check GuildFTP's WinXP help page which will help you adjust Windows XP to run with GuildFTP. Basically, Microsoft's own FTP service and firewall cause problems for non-Microsoft software. Try the section titled "ALLOW FTP THROUGH XP BUILT-IN FIREWALL" first. If that doesn't work, follow additional suggestions on GuildFTP's WinXP help page, or contact me.

1.      Sign up for a No-IP account.

8.      Run and configure GuildFTP.

8.1.  Set the server options.

8.2.  Configure System options.

8.3.  Add groups.
